An interesting lecture by the CEO of Weblogs S.L. today in class. The discussion around his lecture brought about many interesting topics that interested me personally:
Firstly, was the aspect of growth. Martin brought up the point that their growth is limited because of the number of topics to talk about, the number of viewers and the geographic market. I also think that it will also be limited by language because it limits the number of people that can read and interact with the blog. But sometimes growth is not always a good thing you don't always have to have a strategy to grow as sometimes it is good to operate in a niche market.
.
Secondly, the aspect of charging a premium to advertiser for the "church going" viewers. This was an interesting point that was made by a class mate and I wonder if this is the direction we will see advertising costs go in the near future. I also wonder if there is a cost benefit to start to educate the advertiser in order for the blogger to start implementing this idea now.
.
Thirdly, the aspect of banner advertisements. It was said that blogs have become less authentic and more like a sales magazine because of the abundance of ads found on blogs nowadays. I really liked Julio's response because he said he is in the business of creating magazines which is a good way of putting it. Weblogs has moved away from using the traditional banner type advertisement. They design each blog so that the advertisements are more relevant to the reader. They try to match the ad so that it enhances the user's experience by creating value. I think that in this way Weblogs S.L. has used a type of google tactic where it matches the readers area of interest with products from that same area. This is similar to what google does with its search engine, it markets products based on what the user searched for.
.
Lastly, the use of social media as a form of interacting with their viewers and as a way to gain traffic. I think that social media is an increasingly common platform used to communicate and if you don't use it then many clients may be lost but as Julio stated you should never put all your eggs in one basket. Instead one should leverage social media to appeal to a subset of their clients who actually use social media but not all clients use social media and this point should be taken into consideration. However, I am interested in knowing that percentage of Weblogs S.L. unique users that are gained through Social media and if they have a marketing strategy that is specific to Social Media?
Until next time.
